It’s hard to say if tonight was the last of the season’s First Fridays on the waterfront in Manteo or the simply a big celebration at the Dare County Arts Council.
This is going to be a big weekend for the DCAC. After a couple of years in the planning stage and about a year in construction, the courtyard, behind the arts council building will have its grand opening tomorrow.
The DCAC Gallery is the old Dare County Courthouse. Dating from 1904, the brick structure is a beautifully maintained building.
Although the Courtyard has not yet been officially dedicated, music was filling the air as a singer and guitarist performed.
Inside the Gallery there was real excitement.
In the Vault, where monthly artists are featured, Susannah Sakal’s mixed media creations were on display. Sakal, with her husband Paul Manning, were until recently the owners of the Front Porch Cafes on the Outer Banks. Sakal’s work is mixed media featuring glazes on wood.
In talking to Sakal, she said she had always wanted to have the time to work on her art, and that after selling the coffee shops, she is able to spend the time in her studio.
Upstairs, in what was once the Dare County Court, the Great Art Heist was going ahead full bore. With some nice acoustic jazz from a guitar and stand up bass duet, hors d’ouevres and some sparkling wine, the the annual art auction got underway.
The range of items available is too great to list here, everything from exquisite glazed pottery to paintings to jewelry. The GreatArt Heist will be on display through October 30.
The Outer Banks is filled with surprising things to do and see. Fall is one of the best time to visit and our Brindley Beach Vacations homes are part of a perfect week at the beach.
