It was a wonderful but cold day as the annual Big Currishuck at Sanctuary Vineyards in Jarvisburg came to life once again. They had to take a year off last year, but things starting to get back to normal and there may be nothing quite as wonderfully normal as the Big Currishuck.
It has become a part of Thanksgiving weekend on the Outer Banks for quite a number of families and visitors.
The premise is simple—great live music, hayrides for the kids, barbecue courtesy of Spare Parts Barbecue & More, and lots and lots of steamed oysters. And they were really good this year. Plump, slightly salty…a real treat.
Of course the wine was from Sanctuary Vineyards. A number of their wines match beautifully with oysters. There were also two local breweries on hand—Lost Colony Brewery from Manteo and Swells’s Brewing that just opened in Kill Devil Hills.
The oysters are from I Got Your Crabs. The restaurant is located in Kitty Hawk and from the first Big Currishuck they have been partnering with Sanctuary Vineyards.
The music was local rock band Formla, followed by Of Good Nature. Kind of a combination reggae and alternative rock sound. The trombone really added to some of the reggae numbers. Last band up was the country band Brothers Stonesifer.
There were a lot of folks on hand this year…around 750 was the estimate. That’s slightly less than past years, but that northwest wind off the farm fields probably kept some people away. It was a cold wind—but for those of us at the event, there were all those steamed oysters to keep our hands warm.
