It’s time to bring the big appetite and love of all things shrimp to the Outer Banks. The13th Annual Outer Banks Shrimp Cookoff is coming up soon.—November 5 and 6 to be exact. A benefit for the Outer Banks Center for Dolphin Research, it is a great way to accomplish two wonderful goals in life: simply some amazing shrimp dishes from Outer Banks chefs, and support research into the dolphin population of the Outer Banks sounds.
The Outer Banks Center for Dolphin Research has been documenting the life of the local dolphin population since 2008. The research that the organization has done under the supervision of Jessica Taylor includes peer reviewed papers on lesions on the skins of the dolphins as well as research on the migrating habits of the local population.
That’s the serious side to what OBCDR does. But they also know that there has to be some fun mixed in, and the Shrimp Cookoff is a blast.
In the past, everyone tried to crowd into one restaurant. For the past few years it’s been a shrimp crawl, and honestly, that works a lot better.
There’s some really good chefs that will be participating representing some of the best local restaurant.
The list isn’t quite complete yet, but so far some of the restaurants that will be competing include last year’s overall winner, the Outer Banks Brewing Station. Two Roads Tavern will be part of the crawl as will the Pony and the Boat in Kitty Hawk. Red Drum Taphouse and Grill on the Beach Road in Nags Head will also be part of the cookoff.
