The fishing has been pretty good along the Outer Banks this fall…or at least it was until a pesky weak low pressure system decided to park itself offshore and send in 20 mph winds for the past four days.
That’s churned up the surf pretty well, so surf fishermen are having a pretty tough go. But things will calm down soon enough, and we suspect the blues, puppy drum, speckled trout and all the other common fall fish will be back in force.
The piers are having a better time of it. There’s still some action happening there. Jennette’s Pier especially, sticking so far out into the ocean, is still seeing some very good action.
According to their last report that came in this morning spot, sea mullet and speckled trout were caught early on. That’s not quite as good as yesterday’s report that puppy drum and black drum to the mix as well as some blues.
The weather today isn’t all that different than yesterday, so we expect to see the action stay pretty much the same as the day goes on.
There’s really not happening much at all out in the Gulf Stream for offshore fishing. There’s been a small craft advisory in effect for the past three days which will extend through tomorrow and maybe even into Monday.
Right now the seas are running 7-8’ offshore, winds 25-30 mph with stronger gusts. It’s not a good day at all to be on the open seas hoping to reel in yellowfin tuna, marlin, mahi-mahi or anything else that passing by.
With winds as strong as they have been across the open waters, there’s not inshore action either. Those 25 knot winds tend to keep the boats at the dock.
Nonetheless, the fishing is looking great for the rest of the fall on the Outer Banks. Fishermen and women, grab those rods and reels and take some time off while staying in a Brindley Beach Vacations home.
