Every place has holiday traditions and for the Outer Banks the Halloween holiday tradition happens along First Street in Kill Devil Hills.
It will be a bit of madhouse there tomorrow night as neighbor after neighbor vies to create the scariest, the most horrifying, the most nightmarish Halloween memory they can.
And it’s all in great fun.
All the neighborhood roads are clogged with kids and their parents. Heck, the police show up and make sure no one is driving faster than five miles per hour.
One thing is for sure…there’s a lot of candy handed out. A whole lot of candy handed out.
It’s not just First Street. That’s where all the action is centered. That whole section of Kill Devil Hills seems to participate—probably a five or six block area.
It’s not clear at all how it all started. Maybe a couple of neighbors started competing to see who could create the best Halloween decoration. Perhaps it was the entire neighborhood. No one seems to know. Just that for at least the past 20 years, the place to be on Halloween, if you’re under the age of 18, is First Street in Kill Devil Hills.
That doesn’t mean there aren’t other great places to go tomorrow night. Manteo has always put on a great time for the kids. And all over the Outer Banks, the welcome is out for trick or treaters. But there is something just so special about seeing everyone gathered together with all those scary and creative costumes wandering around and among the amazing yard art for the season.
We just realized that we forgot to mention the most perfect play ever for the weekend is playing now through tomorrow night at the Theater of Dare. The Rocky Horror Show—theatrical production of the cult favorite movie. Time for the time warp…just a step to the left…just a step to the right.
So many fun things happening on the Outer Banks. Come and be a part of it while staying in a Brindley Beach Vacations home.
