There’s going to be some road construction in Nags Head beginning February 6. It looks as though there is going to be a lot of it and it will be pretty disruptive. Of course, that will not extend into the summer months; still, it will be with us through mid May.
It’s a repaving project of S. Croatan Highway—the Bypass. It’s much needed but it will be disruptive…as we discovered when NCDOT repaved the Bypass through Kitty Hawk.
The project will move forward in two phases. The first phase will be gin at Gray Eagle Street, just north of Jennette’s Pier, and proceed north to the Nags Head Town hall.
The second phase will run north from Town Hall to Jockey’s Ridge State Park.
According to information NCDOT has published, there is a third section that will be addressed, from Jockey’s Ridge to the Kill Devil Hills town line, but that won’t happen until fall.
At the same time the road is being repaved, plans also call for replacing pipes that run underground beside the road. That phase of the project may be the most disruptive.
NCDOT feels southbound traffic will not have to be diverted, but northbound will have to be rerouted to the Beach Road.
They do add a cautionary note that when construction reaches Town Hall, all traffic may have to be sent to the Beach Road, which will cause considerable delays, even in the off season.
It is a little bit disruptive and certainly can slow things down, but if the final product is anything like what we now have in Kitty Hawk, it’s worth a little patience on the part of drivers.
The Outer Banks is gearing up for summer. Have you made your Brindley Beach Vacations reservations yet? If not, don’t delay. We’re filling up quickly.
