Here we are in the Outer Banks winter doldrums, if that’s what it is, and to paraphrase a Mark Twain quote, the report that the Outer Banks has rolled up its sidewalks and got to bed at sunset is grossly exaggerated.
First of all, there’s not a lot of sidewalks to roll up, but more to the point, there is still some great activities. Is it as busy as it will be in a few months? Of course not.
The Outer Banks becomes a midsized city in the summer, but at this time of the year, taking the total population from Carova to Ocracoke there’s maybe 40,000 folks living here. And that population is spread out over 100 plus miles.
So of course there is not going to be something happening every night. But there sure was some good music tonight at Jack Browns as the Ramble rocked the house.
The bank is made up of four local musicians and they are good…really good. Playing everything from their own music to the Grateful Dead, the Allman Brothers Band and Frank Sinatra (really), they are a great group of musicians.
But it’s important to note they are not the only entertainment happening right now on the Outer Banks.
Poor Richard’s in Manteo keeps things going on Saturday nights throughout the winter. Jack Brown’s in Kill Devil Hills has live music on Fridays and Saturdays. The Outer Banks Brewing Station looks like they’re getting ready to start with some live music soon. That doesn’t include the Wednesday night open mic that Monte Hooker hosts at Art’s Place in Kitty Hawk.
The point is, there is still some great things to do on the Outer Banks…even if it’s not quite as much as we have in the summer.
