It’s official. The Outer Banks has some of the coolest things to do in the state. It seems two museum sites located on the Outer Banks have made the Trip advisor top ten North Carolina list and a third site is among the top 30.
Coming in at number two, just behind the Biltmore House in Asheville, the Wright Brothers Memorial in Kill Devil Hills was one of the most popular sites around.
Not too far behind that, the Currituck Beach Lighthouse came in at number six.
And, giving the village of Corolla its due, the Whalehead Club came in at number 23.
All things considered, that’s quite an accomplishment.
Who knows what would have happened if the Cape Hatteras Lighthouse wasn’t closed down for some much needed and very extensive renovations. Or for that matter, maybe even the Graveyard of the Atlantic Museum would have made the list if it wasn’t undergoing a major overhaul that will greatly expand what it display space as well as improve the research area.
Of course the Outer Banks is much more than its museums, but it’s great to know that what we have is appreciated.
For anyone, though, who is wondering if there are other museums and points of history to explore while on the Outer Banks, here’s a short partial list.
Be sure to stop by Roanoke Island Festival Park and check out their Native American village. The Currituck Beach Lighthouse deservedly make the top ten list, but don’t sell the Bodie Island Lighthouse short…especially since it’s a bit taller than the Currituck Beach Lighthouse.
Bodie Island is part of the National Park Service and another cool site to check out is Fort Raleigh on Roanoke Island where the Lost Colony’s unsuccessful attempt was sited.
Finally, while in Corolla, be sure to check out the Currituck Maritime Museum with its amazing collection of the watercraft of Currituck Sound. Also right there at the foot of Currituck Beach Lighthouse is the Outer Banks Center for Wildlife Education. Ignore the name and check it out as a great way to see and experience the history of the area.
So much to do on the Outer Banks from Corolla to Hatteras Island. Plan your visit today with and be sure to include a stay in a Brindley Beach Vacations home.
