Even with modern equipment, minute by minute weather forecasts and GPS, the waters of the Outer Banks can prove treacherous. And yesterday there was another example of that as a 28’ vessel, the Caro-lina, ran ashore in the early morning hours on the north end of Hatteras Village.

The Caro-lina was small enough that a crane was able to move the craft, first farther up on the beach so it wouldn’t drift back into the ocean, and finally over the dune and into a flatbed truck.

No one was injured when the boat came ashore.

There are a number of photographs of the photos of the craft in the water and being lifted by the crane. It’s a little difficult to tell from the pictures, but it does look as the operation to get the craft off the beach damaged it extensively.

Earlier today, as the it was being lifted over the dune and onto the trailer, there was one lane of traffic in and out of Hatteras Village on the south end of Hatteras Island.

At this point in time, there is not information about why the Caro-lina beached. There were storms in the area during the time the boat came ashore, but it’s not clear if weather played a roll in what happened.

There have been a number of incidents this year with small watercraft having problems in local offshore waters. Certainly for experienced mariners, it’s safe taking a fishing trip offshore. But the local waters have a well-deserved reputation for being difficult to navigate, and it takes a while to learn how to read the Outer Banks waters.

The beauty of the Outer Banks call out to be explored. From Corolla to Hatteras Village, Brindley Beach Vacations is sure to have the perfect home away from home.
