With apologies to Ernest Thayer who wrote Casey at the Bat, when Barrier Island Bagels closed its doors back in July there was no joy in Mudville…or in this case the Outer Banks.
But, the sun is shining again and life is good. Barrier Island Bagels has reopened in Kitty Hawk in what was Argyles for 30 some years. There are new owners but a quick sample makes it clear the old recipes were passed along.
Now with a permanent location, the new owners bought the Argyle building from the previous owners, and with an expanded menu, things look to be better than ever.
The new owners, Kallie and Robert Largent got the bagel recipes from the Barrier Island folks and are working with PJ and Debra Sinkage who owned Argyles for all those year. The bagels are the same as they have always been—wonderfully chewy with a little extra chew on the crust. They are about as far from the round bread with a hole in it that passes for a bagel in supermarkets it they could be.
Better than ever, though, Barrier Island Bagels is serving the Argyles breakfast 7 a.m. to 1 p.m. Wednesday through Sunday. That means bagels are on the menu, but so are crepes, omelets, sausage and biscuit, pancakes and more. And for weekend brunch, the Argyles bar is still open.
The hours will probably expand in the summer.
Back in July, when Barrier Island closed after the owners were unable to work out something with the management at the Marketplace in Southern Shores, it looked as though the closest place to get a freshly made bagel for Duck to Nags Head was clear up in Corolla at Lighthouse Bagels. There hasn’t been any activity yet, but according to reports, a Marshalls Department Store will be moving into the old Barrier Island location and adjacent stores.
It’s great though to see a local business stay local—especially since its serving up some great bagels and breakfast.
Always something exciting happening on the Outer Banks. Stop by and check it out for yourself when you stay in a Brindley Beach Vacations home.
