Winter is settling over the Outer Banks and things certainly have slowed down, but there are still a few things worth taking note of.
Perhaps the one event that we really want to draw attention to is coming up this Saturday at the First Flight High School auditorium in Kill Devil Hills.
Sponsored by the Martin Luther King Jr. Birthday Celebration Committee, two hours of what promises to be a remarkable tribute to the man’s legacy.
The event begins at 11:00 a.m. and is a free event.
Included in the schedule is a reenactment of Dr. Kings powerful and iconic I Have a Dream speech delivered on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial in Washington, DC on August 28, 1963. The speech continues to resonate to the present day both as a way to reflect upon how much progress we have made to achieving the more perfect union of the Founding Fathers, and how much more work there is to be done.
Also on the schedule for the day are performances by local gospel quartet The Echoes of Heritage and the First Flight High School choir.
The musical highlight, though, will certainly be the Elizabeth City State University Concert Choir. The ECSU choir is noted as being truly world class and it will be a real treat to hear them perform.
In addition to the musical selections and the reenactment of Dr. King’s speech, there will be a poetry reading.
This should be a special day to reflect upon how far we have come and how we will continue to learn to work together.
Things are a bit slow on the Outer Banks right now, but summer is coming and our homes are filling with vacationers anxious to come for a visit. Be sure to make your Brindley Beach Vacations reservation today.
