The newest convenience store to come to the Outer Banks just took a major step today toward opening its doors. Of course the actual opening of the Kill Devil Hills Wawa is still a good seven or eight months in the future, but with the official groundbreaking ceremony today, there’s no doubt that sometime in the winter of 2024 the store will open.
And one of the most surprising things about this store is it will be the first to open in North Carolina.
Giving Wawa their due, they brought out a lot of their heavyweights to let the Outer Banks community know they care. And they weren’t shy about handing out goodies-which is probably the best way of all to introduce yourself to the unknowing.
Of course, there is a good sized contingent of Philadelphia expats here on the Outer Banks, so a lot of the residents already knew about Wawa. And it may be that part of the reasoning for the companies first foray into the state is that so many of the visitors to the Outer Banks come from areas that already have a Wawa so they don’t have to keep introducing themselves.
It does look as though Wawa is making a significant commitment to North Carolina. Although the KDH location will be the first, according to the speakers at the event, over the next five years they’re planning on opening 35 stores and believe they’ll have around 50 in 10 years.
The event was capped off with a few local officials and the Wawa executives grabbing shovels and throwing a symbolic shovelful of dirt from a mound of sand put at the site to mark the event. Then a bunch of confetti was shot into the air and construction officially has begun…Monday though, the workers will be on hand.
