This may have been the best Dare Days we have seen. The annual celebration of history, community and the arts that’s held in Manteo on the first weekend of June had so much going for it.
The location was changed. In the past, Dare Day was held in along the waterfront in downtown Manteo. A great location. However, especially on a hot day, with all those building and the pavement, it started to bake.
This year the main event was moved to Roanoke Island Festival Park, an easy walk from downtown. But, with its open grassy area overlooking Roanoke Sound, there was plenty of room to spread out, and there are enough trees around to give a little shade.
Visually it looked as though there was more room for the various vendors with the remarkable array of crafts and foods. And the appearance was that there were a lot more this year than in past years.
Attendance seemed way up. Of course at least a part of it was people just want to get out and enjoy being together again.
Something else new this year that also made a difference. The first night activity, which traditionally is the June First Friday, was held at the new COA campus. That campus is beautiful and perfect for the type of activity that was happening on Friday evening. Music from local bands the Blue Crab Boys and Trick Fly, and just a great evening.
Both days featured lots of music, some great food from area food trucks and vendors a ton of things for kids to do and on Saturday pirates and sword fighting.
Of course the weather was just about perfect for an outdoor event today. There was a little morning rain, but skies cleared before noon, the sun came out the day stayed dry, comfortable and sunny.
