Summer must be right around the corner. Ami Hill’s Muse OBX Bus is back on the road again.
The bus, painted an unmistakable shade of coral—some would call it pink, is loaded with local art and some of the finest craft creations. But what makes the Muse Bus so special is it is not just the bus. Showing up with Ami are 10 or 12 artists with their wares.
Earlier today they were parked at Jack Brown’s in Kill Devil Hills. They’ll be back again a few more times there, but after may the tow of KDH wants permanent shops and what the Muse Bus represents is something a bit more transient.
Still Ami and that small troop of artists manage to find quite a number of place to show their wares.
Next week on Friday they’ll be at the Outer Banks Brewing Station. The bus even makes trips to Buxton from time to time.
What really makes the Muse OBX idea so compelling is how original it is. She did have a store for a short time just before COVID hit, but when it became apparent that having a brand new store with an idea that was still building—working exclusively with local artists—she came up with a different way to build her business.
That way was a 1998 school bus.
Things have really picked up for her. A couple of years ago there would be maybe two or three vendors with her. Today when we saw her, it was like a mini-festival with sound a dozen tents set up. Everything from locally grown hemp products to handcrafted jewelry to some beautiful hand made cutting boards. There was even some cupcakes for sale.
It’s all part of a creative spirit that helps make the Outer Banks such a wonderful place to live or visit.
