Action, adventure, pirates, an evil governor of a tropical island, a fair lady in distress—although to be fair, Geneviève Bujold as Jane Barnet, is quite capable of taking care of herself. “Swashbuckler” is coming to the Outer Banks for a one time showing at the RC Theater in Kill Devil Hills at 4 p.m.

It will be on Sunday so there’s not much time to get tickets but this is a great film for the whole family.

Starring Robert Shaw as Captain "Red" Ned Lynch and James Earl Jones as Nick Debrett, there is nothing subtle about this movie.

Peter Boyle plays the evil Governor Lord Durant. Lord Durant has imprisoned Jane Barnet’s (Bujold) father, the once high judge of the land, but now Lord Durant is both judge and governor.

Barnet will have nothing of that and she hires Ned Lynch to assassinate Lord Durant—the plot fails, and everyone is sentenced to be hanged.

But they escape and return to wreak horrible vengeance upon Lord Durant.

There is nothing subtle about this film. The English nobility and rulers are bad; the common people are good; pirates find the treasure of the city looted by Durant and return it all to the people.

And after denying their true feelings—and fighting a duel—the Lady Barnet and Pirate Captain Lynch realize they are in love.

This is a wonderful movie for the whole family. Is it a great movie? No. Is it a fun movie? Yes!

“Swashbuckler” is the first in a series of Sunday movies the Bryan Cultural Series will be screening. Next up is the 1938 “Robin Hood” starring Errol Flynn and Olivia de Havilland on Sunday, February 27.  Followed by “Enchanted April” on March 6 and “Blade Runner,” the Director’s cut on March 13.

Even in the winter there are wonderful ways to enjoy the Outer Banks. The pace has slowed down a bit, but it’s still quite wonderful and made even better in a Brindley Beach Vacations home.
