With the announcement the the Outer Banks Community Foundation office at 13 Skyline Drive in Southern Shores has been purchased by the Town of Southern Shores, things are looking up for the largest charitable organization on the Outer Banks.
The OBCF is in a lot of ways the heart and soul of Outer Banks giving. Founded in 1982 by Andy Griffith, David Stick and a number of other prominent local residents, the organization has been at the forefront of local giving since its beginning.
And it has grown. Much of that is good management, but mostly because of the generosity of local giving, especially from Outer Banks businesses.
Back when it was founded, David Stick gifted his Southern Shores flat top home to the organization to be the offices. That worked well for 40 some years, but the fact it has just become too small…and the mission of the OBCF is for all of the Outer Banks and a more central office makes sense.
So, as we wrote a few weeks ago, the organization is moving to Manteo and hoped to sell the old building.
The announcement just came that the building has been sold and things could hardly have worked out better.
The Town of Southern Shores is buying the offices with plans to preserve the classic 1953 flat top as part of their overall strategy of preserving the historic integrity of the town’s flat top heritage.
The OBCF has also been active in preserving the flat tops. In 2009 the Flat Top Preservation Fund of the Outer Banks Community Foundation was created to preserve the office at 13 Skyline Drive. That fund is also part of the legacy of the semi-annual Southern Shores Flat Top Tour.
Kudos to the to and congratulations to the OBCF.
The Outer Banks is a wonderful caring community that welcomes everyone to this sandbar by the sea. See what makes this such a wonderful place with a stay from Corolla to Hatteras Village in a Brindley Beach Vacations home.
