Generally speaking we try to write about the great stuff that makes the Outer Banks such a fantastic place to visit, live and work. Sometimes, though, something comes up and we need to let our readers and visitors know about what’s happening.
In this case, it’s not earth shattering or banner headline news, but it is important information to have.
Beginning next week on US 158 between the Water Park and the Wright Memorial Bridge, the speed limit is going to be lowered from 55 MPH to 45 MPH.
Not earth shattering, as we said, but important since something like 75-80% of our visitors use that road to get our sandbar by the sea.
The reason the speed limit is being lowered is something like 150 accidents have occurred along that 3.4 miles stretch of road. Although many of the accidents have been minor, unfortunately some have resulted in loss of life and significant injuries.
The stretch of road that where the speed limit is being lowered is the portion of the highway that often backs up on Saturdays and Sundays.
Lowering the speed limit will probably be the first of a series of step that will be taken. According to Win Bridges, Highway Engineer for NCDOT Division 1—northeastern North Carolina—the highway division is considering additional options
“Rumble strips and six-inch pavement markings have already been installed along this section of the highway,” he said in a NCDOT press release. “Lowering the posted speed limit is another step. In the long-term, more permanent measures are necessary, such as access management.
For our guests, please take your time getting here; the Outer Banks isn’t going anywhere. The safer you are the more you’ll enjoy your visit.
While visiting, please consider staying in one of our wonderful homes.
