That coastal storm seems to be passing by now. There were some pretty strong gusts, but it never quite blew like the forecast predicted. The roads have also stayed open.
NCDOT reported some mild overwash at the S Curves, but according to the lates statement, the area is passable and crews are ready to move into the area.
Nothing we’ve experienced so far is anything like what is happening to the west and north of us. That’s where it’s snowing—which isn’t all that bad—or the storm is producing freezing rain and sleet. Which is very bad.
We’re not out of the woods yet. The winds have just shifted to the southwest and will continue to shift finally blowing straight from the west. Those are winds that can cause soundside flooding as the waters are pushed into the bays and estuaries
It doesn’t look like it will be severe flooding, but it certainly is something to pay attention to.
We may have some interesting weather later in the week. Right now the forecast for Friday and Saturday is calling for snow showers. And those that will be for the better part of two days. We do get snow occasionally on the Outer Banks, but two days of snow, even if it’s just brief squalls and showers is pretty rare.
For any visitors lucky enough to be here this week—yes, even in the winter this sandbar by the sea is a beautiful place—if it does snow enough to stick, especially on the roads…well, be careful.
Although a considerable portion of the population of the Outer Banks grew up driving in snow, and equally considerable portion did not. And their snow driving skills are…well, interesting.
We’ll see how it goes. If it does snow, we’ll get some great pictures of a truly different winter wonderland.
