Outer Banks, NC weather is getting nicer, the days a little longer and the thought of hopping on a bike and taking ride is becoming more tempting by the day.
To help with that, there is a great new ride that we would like to recommend.
This is a mountain bike ride—it really couldn’t be done with a skinny tire bike. A hybrid bike should be able to do it as well.
We’ll call this the Birch Lane Trail Ride, which is where the trail ends.
The beginning of the trail is at Kitty Hawk Park on Kitty Hawk Road in, well, Kitty Hawk. The park has a really nice skateboard area, a dog park and picnic tables. Plenty of parking also.
There is a wooden walkway that leads into Kitty Hawk Woods on the west side of the park. There are actually two walkways with a gravel trail between them. Past the second walkway, the real trail begins.
The trail follows a low ridge between swales and marsh. Towering loblolly pine line the trail. In the marsh, black gum, swamp tupelo and cedar march into the distance. The trees are filled with rustle and call of birds. Woodpeckers, bluejays, robin, and too many to even list are everywhere.
The trail is a little over three miles long and is very well marked. There are a few minor ups and downs, but no hills. It does require paying attention, though. There are a couple of quick turns around trees, and the trail sometimes gets slick with pine needles and hickory nuts. It can also be quite soft after a hard rain.
The trail ends at Birch Lane. Either ride the trail back or go to the end of Birch Lane, turn left and then left again on the Woods Road. That will lead to Kitty Hawk Road. Turn left again about in about a half a mile for Kitty Hawk Park.
The Outer Banks offers something for everyone. See for yourself how wonderful it can be while staying in a Brindley Beach Vacations home.
