One thing is for sure. The summer visitors have gone home, but music is still very much with us on the Outer Banks.
There’s the Duck Jazz Festival coming up October 8 and 9. Then two weeks after that there’s the Outer Banks Bluegrass Festival in Manteo.
But those are the big venue, the big name acts.
Meanwhile, there’s still lots happening at the smaller venue.
On a Wednesday evening, stop by Art’s Place on the Beach Road in Nags Head. Monte Hooker has been hosting an open mic there for some time and kudos to Art’s Place for really upping their game.
Their backyard is sort of a wonderful picnic area and bar with a nice stage. The sound system is quite good and the performers wonderful. Monte himself is one of the best Outer Banks musicians around so if he’s playing somewhere, be sure to check him out.
Last time we were there, we asked how long the outdoor shows would continue and Monte assured us as long as the weather holds. After that, it’s indoors, and well, for those who have never experienced the dining area of Art’s Place, the best way to describe it is as close and cozy.
One of the things that makes Art’s Place so great for music is the food. It’s not gourmet—that’s not what they’re all about. But their burgers are as good as any on the beach. They also have a very nice selection of beers, wine, the usual bar mixed drinks. All in all, a great way to spend a couple of hours on a Wednesday evening.
Thursday at Art’s Place it’s Joe Mapp and his jazz guitar. Joe is absolutely as good as anyone anywhere on guitar. Really worth checking out.
Fall is here and there is still lots to do on the Outer Banks. Stop by for a while and stay in a Brindley Beach Vacations Home and see what it’s all about.
