What Is the Ocracoke Express?

The Ocracoke Passenger Ferry is a seasonal, high-speed ferry operated by the North Carolina Department of Transportation. It carries walk-on passengers and bicycles (no vehicles) between Hatteras Village and the terminal in Silver Lake, right in the center of Ocracoke Village.

Unlike traditional vehicle ferries, this one is quick, smooth, and ideal for same-day out-and-back visits. It’s also easy on the wallet, at just $15 round-trip per adult, plus $1 for a bike. Kids under three ride free. There is no gas, no parking headaches, and no sitting in line. Just hop on, enjoy the breeze, and get ready to explore.

Where and When Does the Ferry Run?

The Ocracoke Express runs Monday through Saturday from May 13 through September 15, 2025. There is no passenger ferry service on Sundays.

Tuesday–Thursday:

  • Depart Hatteras: 8:30 a.m., 11 a.m., 1:45 p.m., and 5 p.m.
  • Return from Ocracoke: 9:45 a.m., 12:30 p.m., 3 p.m., and 7:30 p.m.

Monday, Friday & Saturday:

  • Depart Hatteras: 9:30 a.m., 1 p.m., and 4:30 p.m.
  • Return from Ocracoke: 11 a.m., 3 p.m., and 7:30 p.m.

The ferry ride takes approximately 70 minutes each way. Space is available on a first-come, first-served basis if you don’t have a reservation, but booking in advance is strongly recommended in peak season.

The Hatteras ferry terminal includes 110 parking spaces and five overnight spots. Overnight parking is not available at the Ocracoke ferry terminal, so all day-trippers should plan to return the same evening.
