The art community of the Outer Banks is extraordinarily diverse, creative, and talented. Those qualities will be on full display at the 45th Annual Frank Stick Memorial Art Show this Friday, February 3-25 at the Dare Arts Gallery in downtown Manteo.
The Gallery used to be the Dare County Courthouse.
The Frank Stick Show is remarkable for a number of reasons. It is not a judged show, so a lot of first time artists have a chance to get their work before the public.
But, because of its prestige and how long it’s been a part of the winter art scene on the Outer Banks, some of the finest local artists are sure to have put their works int the show as well.
The opening reception is Friday evening at 6:00 p.m. There’s always a good crowd on hand for opening night—and it’s a pretty exciting event.
We don’t have a complete list of what will be on display. Actually, part of the fun of the show is that until opening night, there is almost no way to know what will be at the gallery.
Typically there is some absolutely amazing painting and photography. The Frank Stick Show, however, is also a chance for artists to take some risks so there is invariably interesting jewelry, perhaps some three dimensional art as well.
This is truly one art show to put on the calendar and be sure to attend. Even if getting there Friday can’t be worked out, be sure to stop by later in the month. All of the art is for sale.
The show is in remembrance of Frank Stick, the father of David Stick the author of, among other books, Graveyard of the Atlantic. Frank Stick was one of the most sought after magazine illustrators from about 1910-1930. He soured on the commercial atmosphere of the publishing business, moved to the Outer Banks and became an integral part of local life.
Among his many accomplishments, he was the driving force behind the creation of Cape Hatteras National Seashore and with his son, created Southern Shores.
The art community of the Outer Banks is truly exceptional. Stop by and check out how good the artists really are while visiting and staying in a Brindley Beach Vacations home.
